There is no set distance for this. The important distance is from the beam tester's lens to the car headlamp. This will be in your instruction manual for the beam tester. You are recommended to paint a line on your lift platform to help position the car headlamp. If you are having an OPTL lift then the lift platforms will be long enough for you not to worry about how close the headlamp tester rails are.  However, you need to watch the headlamp tester isn't driven into when you have the car on the steering turntables. The pictured garage is close enough.

Will this apply to existing test stations wanting to upgrade or just to new applications.

We are in process of going to OPTL,have been OK'd by VOSA ,but have to cut section out of recess to position new ramp further forward to get 1.5M from platform to RBT plates. From what I can see in these revised Min requirements, we only need 600mm from RBT plate to edge of recess instead of the present 1.5M to platform. Am I reading it right,if so we won't need to cut out recess and will submit revised plans next month.

Also does anyone know if there is a set distance from the recess edge to the beam testers 1st rail.

Thanks

A couple of years ago MOT Testing editor Jim Punter challenged VOSA to justify the very long length required for MOT Testing Lanes. After discussions with him, VOSA Executives visited his MOT business to measure up his older Test lanes – with the ultimate result, two years later, that VOSA have now revised the requirements for both Automatic Test Lanes and One Person Testing Lanes so that they can be fitted into smaller premises – here are VOSA’s new requirements which will take effect on 1st November 2009.
