VOSA are using desk based essessments now, i had one last week and was told if you are in the green, which we are, you get a DBA once a year and a visit every third year if still in green. here is what you can expect if you get the phone call.  http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/ST3.09%20Desk%20Based%20Assessment%20Overview.30.11.09.pdf   :)

Does this mean unwritten rule, if youre in the green and up to scratch you are pretty much left alone, or is it just less frequent?

A garage ive been freelancing for a year now has had regular visits due to the amount of tests per day. We do no mechanical work really at all but we have two identical drive in ATL bays. The place is immaculate-almost clinical as we test for all the local main dealers inc Jaguar,Toyota,Renault,Alfa,Audi and have private customers too mainly slipped in in the afternoons.

He comes regular to us and we have ended up in "plus points" due to use of seat covers, floor mats and the testers actually knowing how to use a certain piece of equipment and demonstrate it.

The VOSA bobby does say we are targeted due to the throughput of tests but he is happy as he sees the young vehicles we test all day. Most are still in manufacturers warranty. We are well in the green and when he has done his checks and everything is as it should he becomes a really nice guy and you can talk and question him on certain things and have a bit of a laugh. Its all about "good practise"

if you are in the red they will be all over you , they can turn up any time .
keep things right & don't get caught out for anything , especially stupid things like stickers in the windscreen ( which some testers may overlook )

Only been a tester myself for just under a year, but i'm also manager of the garage, we are currently in the red(before I arrived!), today we had a Vosa inspector turn up and ask about re testing a vehicle we had tested that day, as it was only 10 oclok and first 2 cars were now being serviced, he said he would return at a later date, how often are these expected, and any ideas as to when he may return, is there a set time limit he has to return within , not worried about the standards we have in general, but 1 of our other tester's although he believes he is god's gift, has missed a few items on tests which i've pulled him up on, could this be related?
