i agee about the cowboys who repair cars while having other full time jobs or are claiming our tax money on the dole, but they are not what is defined as mobile mechanics. i know an excellent mobile mechanic who is fully quallified, 37 years in the trade, 23 years as a mobile mechanic and 25+ years as an mot tester. he has to abide by rules and regulations like any other business and is classed as a mobile mechanic sole trader for tax purposes.it is true he can be more competitive due to lower overheads.
i also feel he would disagree that he has any food chain to go up as he makes a very good living from what he does.

you are correct we have 2 or 3 of these so called mechanics in my area and all have full time jobs[council ,asda]  i started off as a mobile mechanic and worked my way up the food chain now i am getting under cut by these people who are working from the side of there houses

I think Russell is talking about those mechanics (and i use that word loosely) that have full time jobs (not trade related) or are unemployed that are carrying our car repairs with little or no accountability.

Doesn't matter how many kirb side mechanics there are really, nor does it matter how much to charge in relation to how little they might charge, if price enters the equation, then it will be based on what is considered reasonable for the area of the country in my opinion.
Unemployment is something the government want to reduce and not increase, so mobiles will be treated the same as everyone else.

Just announced:
Aside from keeping the MOT frequency as it is other items included in the Minister's Statement are:
Measures to improve MOT quality
Working with the whole trade to improve repair and servicing quality
We understand this is in no small part due to the effort put by the industry into the ProMOTe Campaign.
