Something about there being 'too much play' on the ball joint on the axle that attaches to the steering column? He drew a picture and it's not the CV/gaitor, that's all I know. Does this sound legit?
My car is 2400 miles away from the next service, so I was shocked something had come up. The reason I'm upset is because I had another car fail it's MOT last year (for a headlamp bulb pointing straight ahead instead of slightly down) and I wonder if it's because I'm a single woman!? I'm not an idiot but they then give me a laundry list (the yellow advisories) of items they 'can help fix' which makes me think they're just cashing in. The list included two new tyres, two new brake pads and two new inner brake discs! The last garage that serviced my car said it would be ok until the next service so I'm surprised.
The ish here is that my car is not even 4 years old, >55k miles, and I have no probs with it. My partner has a really old Beamer that constantly has warning lights going on and stalls at traffic lights and he has never failed an MOT. Is it cos he's a bloke?!
Hi peeps,
No "Paranoia"
You have very Kindly left this original post on here for Me.
How does it actually read to all of you guys?............ ....
The first paragraph, "quotes", too much play on the "Ball joint"? which attaches to the "steering column"? "Quote","He" then, Drew Me a picture of "a robin on a log" which apparently looked nothing like a "cv gaitor"
The explanation or interperetation of the "original fail" Has been extremely "fuddled"
I`ll have a little ass u me,
The inner "axial arm" ball joint, which is "Screwed" into the end of the "steering rack", has, "play, I personally cannot quote on how much because I didn`t carry out the "Inspection".
Then, "katy913", Was so "shocked" that something had, Actually, "Come Up! That she really, "blew" off some "steam". ................PMSL

OP there's a nice little linky here that would suggest you are not alone in having a car fail the MOT at 3 or 4 years old. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8461394.stm
That is if you can stay awake long enough to read it, in typical modern journalistic style the few facts there are are buried deep within the padding and "expert opinions" As someone who's got lacerations down one hand from fitting a nearside sidelight bulb to a megane today i'm not in the slightest bit surprised they head the shamelist.

That's what I was wondering.
I thought Wes might be Paranoid.
But then I realised .... THATS WHAT THEY WANT US TO THINK!

Don't take a sabatical, Wes - we all have bad hair days. Like Sunday when I lifted the mats in my step-daughter's Daf (yes, she's got one too) to do a quick pre-MOT repair patch to the inner sill and found there was no floor-pan to weld to. It felt solid from underneath but as soon as a brush hit it.......

The bad-hair bit was caused by having a 20-year-old heading out to see her mates saying "It's ok, you like fixing things like that"
As for forum spies - they can't get you for giving sound advice according to the evidence posted

It's not their fault they don't know their way round a car - if they did they probably wouldn't have had the fail and certainly wouldn't have to be asking on here
To the OP (and I'm a punter, not a tester btw but I do know my way round spanners a little):
I've never known an MOT garage take advantage of someone because they're female - but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Bear in mind that the fail last year for a headlamp and the one this year aren't connected - two different faults on (I guess from your wording) two different cars.
Careless fitting of a bulb can be enough to put headlamp alignment out - just think how many cars seem to dazzle you with one of their lights at night to see how common that one is (and why it's good to make sure your own are right)!
As for the balljoint, as the testers have said, the exact wording of the fail will at least let them identify the part concerned and, if you also mention the make & model, they've got enough experience to know if it's a common issue.
Having said that, problems with suspension and steering in low mileage new cars does seem to be more common than you might think - we have a less tha 3 yr old that needed a new suspension wishbone when it was about 18 months old with less than 20k on the clock. My inlaws have also had to have two road springs replaced on their 4 year-old because they broke. Unfortunately, that's the price you pay for having everything engineered as light and fuel efficient as possible!
"Sorry" SM,
"bad hair day"
The careless bulb fitment issue is clearly a contributing factor, to failures.
The continued reintroduction of the over exuberent questionable "Spies" , Really Doesn`t Help those that are Willing to, as you say, offer "Genuine Advice".
It appears to me, that a lot of "motoring forums" are suffering from similar issues!
maybye time for a sabbatical?

if its a citroen or peugeot, then a ball joint would probaburally become a fail in that time,
if its a renault defonately,
WE ARE MOT TESTERS not FORTUNE TELLERS nobody can predict the future, unfortunately things break on cars you know??
if you had the head light fitted correctly in the first place then it would not have failed

I cannot speak specifically for the garage you where at but can assure you in my 25 years motor trade experience I have NEVER seen a female customer get "ripped off" because she is female ect.
The exact wording of the failure certificate would be a help , and the advisories are just that ADVISORY so you do not "have" to do them, and they are easily checked somewhere else so why would they lie??.

hi katy
the wording of the failure from the red vt30 fail sheet might help answer your question, and the second bit, no it's not because he's a bloke it's because he's got a bimmer. Last edited on Wed Jan 20th, 2010 02:50 pm by bimmer
