Just a quick comment - have you thought about someone coming in to do a qc if you want some advice?

If you have to think twice, or look at it twice then its a pass and advise. Or has the componment clearly reached the point in time where replacement or adjustment is required.??:D:D

When it comes to wishing you had a second opinion, that makes it a pass and advise. VOSA are not going to have a go if you are applying what you believe to be correct MOT standards. They do realise(I hope) that since no examples can be given for how much play should fail a ball joint, for example, we have to rely on our judgement. So long as you are showing your judgement to be sound, there isn't a problem, and if in doubt, P and A

you dont need a second oppinion, all you have to do is ask yourself ,is it badly worn ,is it likely to fail ,in your oppinion in accordance with the manual is it a pass ,fail or advise, you need to refine your own judgement  to be concise  and accurate ,GOOD LUCK and regards dave

I know the wheel nut scenario is incorrect but my point is that your wheel won't come off if one nut is missing but this is a fail but play which isn't considered excessive in a steering joint, ball joint etc is a pass & advise.
Vosa has never shown me any examples of ball joints in varies state of wear to detrime what they consider is a pass/advise or fail. So if they decide I have failed a component which was a pass/advise I am the one who gets it in the neck.
Vosa has considered all of us as competent people to carry out a mot, and we should all be judged capable of preforming a proper test.
However if they can prove we have been failing vehicles for finance gain then they should remove testing station.
My biggest problem is I work myself and have nobody to get a second opinion.

I fail warped brake discs on sever judder IF it is bad enough when I do a brake test.
You know it is excessive when the needle on the brake tester goes up and down by an amount that you can consider excessive ;)

You could of course also do a road test to confirm the judder ;)

I'm pretty sure that the wheel nut scenario you describe is incorrect.

This is the problem with vosa what you and I would concider excessive and even with the movement on the tester, vosa would/could disagree with our finding.
And as there is no figures to go by we would be the ones in wrong. This is the same as with any testable item.
They say an item must be at the end off is life before we can fail it using this criteria surely a car with 4 wheel nuts would not fail is test until it has only 1 wheel nut left or am I being silly?

This my be a silly question
What would the correct fail to put a warped disc under?
And how would you measure if the disc is excessively warped? (vosa warped not real world)
