Thanks for the reply's guys. I appretiate all the answers so far, but the post below is right. It's still not very clear to me.

To be more specific, this is for a Vauxhall Corsa B 1993-2000 mainly. The uncertenties stem because for the 1.4 16v and 1.6 16v models vauxhall restricted the power output quite a bit via the intake manifold so it didn't compete with the Astra's as much

So aftermarket intake manifold on it frees up some power, and doesn't really comprimise fuel or realiabilty when driving normal.
But doing it can sometimes cause the engine management light to come on more often.

The same thing happens when the EGR valve becomes faulty and is blocked off via a blanking plate. It doesn't cause them to fail the emmisions test if everything else is fine but there are concerns over the new regulations.

Still a little unclear with the airbag removal scenario as well. What constitutes as a special modified vehicle? I always imagined these to be herses or limos?

Sorry for being niave, it's over my head some of it when i try and read the manual. I'm not a tester or inspector but i take an interest in the vehicle trade as a hobby

I think the person who was asking for guidance should now be as clear as mud in the mind of understanding what is required:?, all that babling useless information below just about sums up the actual EXPERTS in the MOT TRADE nicely:(

When I member asks questions which require none personal opinions to the answers, the members who have the experience should keep to the understanding of the inspection manual and it's relevant sections;)

So if a person asks;

Will the EML fail the test, first ask, which EML?

If they say the "engine management lamp", then think about what causes that lamp to illuminated when a fault exists, then check the inspection manual, if then after checking the manual the EML being asked about is not listed, simply advise the person asking the question, no that lamp and it's function is not incorporated into the test criteria.

Maybe like Spunkymonky wrote in bullet form so it is easy to read and follow.

So as long as the product on the lens or light source has not effected them  too much

Engine malfunction lamps (eml) are not part of the test

Until the new items such as srs lamps comes into effect in the spring, its not set in stone yet whats the fail criteria will be regarding srs lamps.

I think vosa are looking at changing the standard where a reason for rejection will apply to srs lamp only if its indicating a fault,so if the bulb has been removed then Yes it will pass that part of the test.

At this present time there is a reason for rejection in the manual for it being in-operative.but what i was told at a recent seminar it will be reviewed;)

We just have to wait and see:)

i was commenting on "sm`s" contribution, and trying to be helpful for a change.;)

although the "eml" lamp may still not be included?:? They the "suits" at the seminars, just refer to a "(mil)" lamp, me thinks that might just cover all?:? but then again it was as clear as mud when the "suits" mentioned the "disablement" of the (mil) lamp for the(srs) system, was acceptable! pmsl!;)

Were "You" the guy that "sped off" In the break? totally dissillusioned?:? and missed All Of the proposed, future changes?;)

I'm not a tester but, as I read these :

1) EML still not tested

2) Steering wheel fail if the original had an airbag (and assuming the replacement doesn't) because:
   (a) there's a new failure for "an airbag obviously missing or defective"
   (b) there's also a fail for "A Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp inoperative OR
indicating a malfunction.  If you remove the bulb it'll be inoperative and that'll be seen as soon as they turn the ignition on.

3) Depends if the tester considers it too dark to be seen from a reasonable distance, even with the brighter bulbs.

I'm sure someone with a ticket will be along shortly to either agree or tell me I'm talking out my tail pipe :)

Some of my friends have modified Corsas (myself included) and i wanted to query a few questions regarding the soon to be enforced guidelines

There is some debate going on between the new MOT guidelines on what is a pass and fail and for any possible legal loopholes

1) If the EML is on, is this now an MOT fail? AA's page says only warning lights relating to full beams, ABS, airbag and traction control ect should matter but no mention of the EML light

2) If the EML light is a fail or the car has been fitted with an aftermarket steering wheel, does removing the bulb constitute as a legal loophole for it to pass (no warning lights are on after al)

2) The regulations imply that tinted / covered lights are now a fail. If someone has mildly tinted the rear lights but installed brighter bulbs to compensate so they are the same brightness as OEM, would this be a pass or a fail?

Various sites and generic car forums have different answers so thought i'd post here for deffinitive ones

Thanks in advance

Tam
