that would effectively mean your car + 500 quid to buy an unknown car that could need just as much spending on it .
far rather spend a similar amount of money on the one yo already have , at least that way you will know the car is somewhere near right & not someone elses problem car .

very true

okay first decide for yourself how much your willing to spend on "another car" then decide how much your current car is worth. Bear in mind if you buy another car if it is secondhand then you may not know the history so you may also have to spend more on that "new car".

now you have this price on your car - also think about changes in insurance price!!

as below take it for an MOT as this is the cheapest way of getting an idea on the condition of your car. Being a forum and not at the car itself if very difficult to advise on the car as this is more of a hands on situation.

Salesmen\women are out to make money so an evaluation will always be tipped in thier favour - hence why us testers and mechanics see this as a different value to a retail value - ie a price to sell on ebay or a newspaper/local paper.

now once you have the mot certificate you can then ask for repair (if required) prices and if this exceeds your price you have allowed for repairs then you have the answer to your first question.

I know this is long winded but there is no easy answer as the question your asking is basically for us to make up your mind - you have to decide for yourself but as below - I am unsure what is refered to as a steering joint - sound like it could be a steering rack joint as mentioned below which could be as priced. track rod end is at the end of the steering rack and these are not expensive as suggested.

The value of your car is worth what you feel it is worth and unless your a car sales person the retail value in this market at this time is nothing compared to what you may have paid for it and nothing worth to how much a car is realy worth.

Food for thought

Hi Penny,

Don't take sales people at their word:(, I am not saying they are trying to pull a fast one, but they have to move the car on after trade in, so it is good practice to look your car up in a good reputable guide like parkers etc, then after that you should know what your car is actually worth;)

Advisories should be explained to you at reception once they issue the documentation, some are more important than others, so a suspension bush slightly deteriorated would not be serious, but a steering track rod end could have more serious consequencies if left a long time.

If the mot station does not give advise at the end of the test, it would be best practice to ask, or get a second opinion rather than leave the defects until the next test?

:)

Depends were you take it for repair Penny as garages charge different prices,a ball park figure for say a track rod end would be no more then £30+tracking as that will require adjustment about £20/25.

The steering rack front joint approx £75/100 but thats just my estimation if its the one iam thinking of:)

A track rod end badly worn is dangerous:(

Or any badly worn steering joint will need to be replaced.

Thanks, I realise that just because it is an advisroy does not mean that it will fail this time, but I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea on how serious (read expensive!) the problems are likely to be to fix. When I looked at part ex-ing it last year the nasty car salesman offered me £100, so probably not worth spending my money on it to keep it going.

Any ideas anyones

Hi Penny:)

Although there were some advisories on your car last year it will depend on if they have reached the point were replacement is needed on this mot, they maybe still an advisory, but its hard to give an opinion were play in a component is concerned without inspecting the component.:)

Advisories you mention are normally components that are close to the fail criteria, need changing/adjusting ect  asap or at least before the next mot.;)

The best advice i can give before scraping your car is to have it tested and take it from there as you maybe surprised and find it has passed. It will however give you some idea of its condition to help you make that decision what to do

Let us know how you get on or need more assistance and welcome to the forum:)

Hello

When I had my 1999 Peugeot 206 MOT'ed last year I got a couple of advisories. The first was 'offside front track rod end ball joint has slight play (2.2.B.1f) and slight play in n/s front steering rack joint.

The MOT expires in a couple of months and I am wondering whether to put it in for another MOT or scrap it. I only use it for a little run around and apart from these advisories, I do not have any problems with it. It has been a great car.

Does anyone have any idea what these advisories indicate and how expensive it is likely to be to get them fixed.

Thanks

Penny
