Stealth you seem to be reading the post as if I am saying the MOT Scheme don't belong to VOSA?

What I actually meant was that MOT Stations in the private sector are the only fools who give their trade away, and then justify their actions later

I just read it as I saw it Bright Ideas - looks like what you said & what you meant were 2 different things, but thank you for clarifying your post.

There are NO vehicle testing stations outside VOSA's network ???  :?

If we do eventually intergrate into one Europe, will it mean that an "MOT" test from a fellow member state will be valid in another state?

Kev

That appears to be the aim Kev - again the subject was raised during the MOT seminars.

There are already two countries exchanging MOT data - Spain & the Netherlands I believe, so the MOT is recognised in both countries.

I fear that it will be the other way round rob - the Government is actively encouraging private contractors to open 'Approved test Facilities' for HGV & PSV testing, leading to the closure of more Goods Vehicle Testing Stations, which is already happening.

The trend appears to be leaning more & more towards partial or eventually full privatisation of the HGV & PSV testing schemes.

In the last round of seminars VOSA stated that they would be seeking to pull out of all Class 4, 5L & 7 testing at Goods Vehicle Testing Stations.

The concept of contractors with a near perfect pass rate at HGV & PSV test being allowed to 'self certify' - issue their own HGV & PSV test certificates - has also been explored.

At present there is no discounting of test fees for 4, 5, and 7's tested at GVTS's

EU will not be allowed to set prices as too many local variations.

Plus the price in UK would vary according to the Euro!

TREASURY bean-counters planned to whack VAT on MOTs in today's budget but George Osborne has vetoed the move - for now.
The proposal would have seen the price of vehicle roadworthiness tests increase by 20 per cent from £54.85 to £65.82, raising £400million a year.

But a senior Treasury source said: "George was not having it at all. It's not something he would want to do."

However the hike may be introduced next year, when new EU rules prevent governments setting MOT prices - making them eligible for VAT.

In the SUN so must be true.
