Dont let vosa see you tap the brake lights on a test. That would put you in a bad light and they see this at the start of the test - they will pay more attension during the test.
ther is an RFR - is incomplete, not in good working order or in clean condition, ie so damaged or deteriorated that its function is impaired.
see for yourself at this location (mot manual online from vosa ) http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m3s01000301.htm
If something is not as standard - advise it - 5 points for an incorrect descision - 20 points for a missed
see here = http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/tgx08000201.htm
Hope this helps

| I check all lights using the mirrors, but you still have to go round and lightly tap the position lamps front and rear by hand. The brake lights you do not have to tap, but i still do it anyway.

Those points wont accumulate to the next visit, but if the brake lights are tested while the side lights are on (usual practice isnt it) how did you miss it? The brake light would not have been visible at all, what with being the same brightness. I think i remember reading you have an atl, maybe you need to upgrade your mirrors.
I just thought, if the brake light was in a seperate section of the cluster to the side light, and you do have an atl, then i guess you could be forgiven for that one.

You will probably get an 'advisory' letter regards test standards removaliser.
20 points is below the threshold for a formal warning - it doesnt go anywhere - take it as more of a reminder about test standards.
Anything below 30 points does not stand for 5 years - VOSA does recognise that mistakes can be made - as long as they are not biggies - take a little time to read the disciplinary section in The MOT Testing Guide

where does it say in the manual that its gotta glow brighter than the sidelight?mustve missed that one...fitted/visible/working,yeah ok.only rfr i can think of is function impaired and it would have to be pretty dramatic to get points for.your visiting ve sounds like a total tit.oh yeah,a formal warning stays on your record for life, they can only count it for 5 yrs..

It's not up to VOSA to decide to put it's self on the market - the bean counters at Whitehall make those decisions as VOSA is government agency.
After a long and protracted 'consultation period' over at least the last two years -
(overseen by the chief executive who previously presided over the 'privatisation' of the REME workshops)
regards 'privatisation' of some or all of VOSA's activities - the whole idea was rejected.

I know this subject is covered on previous posts but I'd like your opinion on something hopefully from the VE's who comment as well
I had my 6 monthly visit yesterday (I'm still in the amber sector) the VE had selected a vehicle I tested earlier in the day that was still parked outside. He checked the vehicle over and went through the items I failed and agreed with all of them, however I had failed to notice one of the brake lights was not glowing brighter than the tailight and issued me with 20 points.
As most of you know this only warrants advice, but it scared the hell out of me, as 10 more points would have given me a formal warning, so what happens if on my next visit I miss 2 minor items that means 40 points and a formal warning which is held on my record for 5 years.
My point is how do other garages cope with this, I don't believe everyone has a clean sheet everytime a VE visits, I know some of you will say do your job right and you will be oK, sorry I don't agree with that, mistakes happen and I personally think the system is too strict.
What do you think ?
