The latest info I can find, which actually quotes the dft: The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) has welcomed confirmation from the Department for Transport (DfT) that no decision has been made on extending the intervals between MOT tests for cars and vans up to 3.5t from three to four years for the initial test and then to two years after the initial test (i.e. moving from 3-1-1 intervals to 4-2-2). The DfT has written to the RMI to say that while the MOT is under review, reports that a decision had been made to extend the initial test period to four years were “pure speculationâ€. John Ball, RMI MOT chairman, says: “It is positive news that the DfT have still not come to any conclusions on the frequency of MOT testing. The RMI along with other trade colleagues have been engaged with the DfT for some time on the wider issues around the current test and continue to view the review as a positive step. An SMMT spokesman says: "Industry’s key priority is to ensure that vehicle safety is maintained to the highest possible standard. Regular checks under the current 3-1-1 MOT test provide this. Government’s proposals to reduce the frequency of MOT testing in the UK raises concerns over road safety and cannot be justified especially when viewed in the light of the latest EU plans to reduce road deaths." That was from yesterday.

I've also heard that other european countries think our system is the way to go, but like it or not Wes, our government is still trying for the change at the moment. As for which media, as well as the links in these forums to several 'newspapers', it's also in one of the mot trade quarterly magazines. I can't vouch for the accuracy of their article, but the quotes they were using were very worrying, so I still advocate lobbying MPs as if it is happening, rather than being complacent and getting it forced on us because there wasn't enough opposition.

I really don`t quite know what "media" you guys are reading? The last I looked at said that the "Italians" Are in favour of moving to Our 3-1-1 setup? ![]() With all the other uprisings in the world at the moment, I guess that we are not exactly at the top of the list. ![]()

What I can't get my head around is when every other organisation calls for any action possible to reduce road deaths, the government thinks that 55 extra(if that is what it amounts to)as stated in the article, is acceptable. The idea that it will reduce the 'burden on the motorist' is another idiotic idea, which I suppose they think will win them some votes in the next election, but as I'm sure I've said before ad nauseam, the insurance companies are not as stupid as the politicians, and will hike up the policy costs because of the increased risks. The only question will be will the policy increases be less than the savings on the MOT. Answers on a postcard please.....

It's more that VOSA don't like the idea because like us, and anybody else with a shred of common sense, they can see that it will cause hundreds more deaths and injuries on the road. Unfortunately the politicians are in charge, and common sense doesn't matter to them.
