can one not just use the items not tested if the exhaust has excessive noise, holed due to the exhaust having a major leak?

This doesn't make any sense to me as surely you can still run a test? They are telling me it will cost £500 to repair it. I am a bit miffed as the car is only worth £300 and they decided to continue with completing a full service despite knowing there were some major faults with it.
Anyway, my question is how can they say that there is a major exhaust leak without doing the emissions test?

Hi gav,

I have had vehicles in which have passed the emissions part of the inspection, and then carried out the underside inspection, only to find a dirty great hole in the rear silencer which you could put your fist through!;) If You can "Hear" what I`m saying?;)

It would be very nice of you to make a reply to your original post?;)

Sounds like the tester may of abandoned this test.Complete test or not it still comes out as a refusal as the presenter has not made it clear in his post,so lets not condem the tester to a lifetime of solitery confinement just yet.;)

Its good to see how fast the company KWIK-FIT have responded to the presenters issues and want to resolve them:)

If the hole was that big, I would stick the probe in it and do the test from there.

I have had a problem like that before, hole was so big in the exhaust that the exhaust gas's would't register, the hole was before the rear exhaust.

Gav,
Provided that the tester could insert the test probe into the tail pipe, (And the tail pipe was present....) Then an emmissions test should have been done. The tester would have known that by attempting to carry out a test on your vehicle he would have taken an additional 5-10 min as he would of had a failed BET test, failed high idle (Possibly) then an additional "warm up" time, then another emmisions test. He has therefore just cut a corner but if you have been given a failure certificate then this is wrong as you have paid for a full test!
The exception would have been if the probe could not be inserted, in which case its an incomplete test, and part fee paid.
