Between Southampton and Portsmouth. I've emailed all the centres listed between Isle of Wight and just above London but I'm waiting for replies. I think the general consensus is that there's not a tremendous demand for the course so courses are not that often. I'm prepared to travel to get on the course sooner so I'll sort something out. Again, I'm waiting for a call back from Andrew Page. Thanks again, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions ![]()

I was quite surprised at how few locations there are to train/test for this qualification. What area are you from. Try searching the Gov.uk site for MOT Manager courses. You can search by postcode. Some of the local colleges are starting to run courses now. Try Andrew Page too as they have a couple of training centres.

Hi mattmatt, welcome aboard. There are a couple of points which might help. First is the AEP. This is the AE Principle, which is the trading entity. It can be a Ltd company, partnership or an individual. Next is the AEDM. This is the Designated Manager. Every site must have a trained person who has attended an MOT manager course. That person then holds the AEDM role at the VTS. First thing you need to do is get yourself booked on, and complete the MOT Managers course. You will need to decide which way you are going, either Ltd or partnership etc before you submit a VT01 to take over the business. I can give more advice once you have made that decision.

The garage I work for is considering (more than likely) becoming Ltd. Either way if it stays as a partnership or changes to LTD they want me to become the AE and QC. The boss at the moment holds these roles and I along with another mechanic are NTs. I will become either a partner if we go LTD or owner if not. Do I need to attain qualifications for both AE and QC or is just the AE sufficient? I keep hearing about AEDM - is this any different from AE? Would appreciate some advice. Basically the owners at the moment are wanting to take a back seat and be employed rather than employers. I'd like to get everything sorted so that if we do switch to LTD the transition is as smooth and quick as possible. Cheers!
