we only need access to the areas we need to access via it.if we cant complete a test and that becomes obvious during the pre checks-this includes ALL doors/access panels compartments that are rqrd to open-its a refusal to test.as long as its readily opened inside or out thats all we need to be able to test it.if on the other hand your method of opening involves leaning over the back seat with a magnet/whistling the national anthem while spinning around 3 times/banging and shouting while offering prayer to the deity of your choice/pulling a string while kicking the wheelarch(all of which ive seen)then you need to let the tester concerned know and be available to perform said miracle while hes testing it as opposed to popping over the shops then shouting at him when you come back and hes kicked it out cos he cant open it.word to the wise yes?sorry to sound so cynical but ive seen this and variations on the theme a hundred times and no one wins.

Welcome to the forum jons

A boot lid that does not open is not an MOT failure although you may want to make your self available if the need arise to open it.

Is a Boot lid that doesn't open from the outside an MOT failure?

Looking at the basic MOT checklist it seems to include boot lid as an exterior check.

The detailed MOT Inspection Manual however doesn't mention boot lids in its breakdown unless we include it as a door.

It lists that Driver and passenger doors must open from inside and outside using relevant controls. It says that load spaces must be secured in the close position.
None of which is relevant to a boot lid. The only bit that could be interpreted as a boot is:
'You should only reject door hinges, catches and pillars for deterioration if it causes the doors not to work as intended.'

The gov website states a none opening boot is a reason to refuse to inspect a vehicle if it impedes their ability to test the vehicle - not that it is an MOT fail.

If anyone can clarify if a boot lid that doesn't open is an MOT failure that would be great.
